Pamela is not only arguably the most famous groupie of all time, she also happens to be an excellent storyteller. Her book, I’m With the Band, gives incredible insight into how it was back in the heyday of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. She goes into great detail, explaining precisely how she felt, lending her audience a key to her personal diary.

I don’t remember exactly how I stumbled upon Miss P’s beautiful magic, but I am very grateful that I did. I do know that I was around 20 years old when I first discovered who she was. This is an important time in any young woman’s life. During that period, I had moved away from home and was sewing together my independence one stitch at a time. It felt like this awe inspiring person whom I had never met…understood me. Almost completely, which felt crazy. Even crazier that the stories of hers that I was reading were from 50 years prior. It just goes to show how music and the feeling that it brings transcends time, space, everything.

Word by word, I fell in love with her writing. The way it made me feel like what my desires in life are aren’t silly or meaningless, that the dreams that are put into each of our hearts are there for good reason. Her vulnerability and spirit seeped through the pages, making me want to grab the nearest time machine to transport myself back into a dressing room alongside the GTO’s (Girls Together Outrageously), Jimmy Page, and the Golden God himself. Why couldn’t I have experienced all of this free love? Why was I to be dealt the card that would put me in the era of wimps and fuck boys? It just didn’t seem fair.

A prodigy of Frank Zappa, the leader of the first all girl band, rockstar whisperer extraordinaire:

MISS PAMELA DES BARRES EVERYONE.

The evening took place at the Eighth Room in the heart of Music City. The room was alive with flower children and lovers of all things groovy. Pamela read passages from her first book, making the audience “ooh” and “ahh” with every turning page. A couple of my favorite moments from the night include when she explained how on probably the luckiest day of anyone’s life, she wandered into a Laurel Canyon home, “did a backbend for the Lizard King” and ended up being his lover shortly after. Another is when she recalled a Rolling Stones concert she went to with the band, looked at Mick performing on the stage, and thought to herself, “I get to fuck that guy tonight”. ICON.

I’d like to say that I could relate more to these moments from her life, but there are a few that made me feel like I’ve somehow been given this extremely rare backstage pass for instances I have only dreamed about. Manifestation is a real thing. The power you give your dreams and desires determines how successful you will be in your journey. I feel like I’ve been manifesting what I want out of life from an early age, and that's truly given me an advantage. Sometimes it’s almost like I’m delusional, that I'm on a totally different path than everyone else my age, and for a split second I let that control how I feel about myself. I believe that it is rare to find someone that is a true free spirit. My best friend Grace is one and has given me the greatest gift with her friendship. I can be myself around her and absolutely love her. The GTOs seemed to have that same thing. I’m lucky enough to have such a great group of friends that put the biggest smile on my face.

While telling about the shirt she had handmade for Gram Parsons, Pamela’s assistant Nichole brought out the piece to display for the audience. It was a beautiful purple button down with the letters “GP” embroidered onto the front. Another item of clothing that was shown was the blue velvet mini dress she had worn during Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” music video. Of course she had spent time with the band and even ended up dating bassist Noel Redding. Even though Hendrix had tried to put the moves on her, she was just too intimidated by his powerful presence, she had recalled.

Starting the occasion off was DJ Amy Darling, spinning some tunes (including my Captain Beefheart record!). Longtime friend of Miss P and local Nashvillian, Todd Snider got up on the stage to perform a couple of songs on his acoustic guitar. It was such a joy seeing her revel in the music, spinning around the stage with such excitement.

At the end of the night I got to spend a little time with Pamela as she signed some copies of her books for me. Her energy is so genuine and comforting. As my friend Emily and I were talking to her, she looked at me and said, “you look so great”, and I knew she really meant it. Her impact on the music world means just as much if not more than all of those rockstars. No wonder they all loved having her around, she’s a complete rockstar herself! Attending one of her writing workshops in 2019 was such a wonderful experience. I recommend going if you have the chance, it’s so worth it!

Thank you Miss Pamela for sharing your stories, energy, and overall being with the world. You are a true national treasure! We love you dearly.

Not only is Grace one of the hardest working guitar players in Nashville, she’s also one of the most genuine. At first introduction, she seems to be a lot older than she actually is, carrying herself with true dignity. It’s no wonder she’s gained the respect of almost every musician in this town, and soon, the world.

Just the night before, she had the opportunity to open up for none other than Mr. Peter Frampton at the Gibson Garage, and had apparently been on his team’s “wish list”. She’s living the life that most musicians can only dream of, and it hasn’t come easy. Of course her skills are that of the legends who have come before her, but it takes a lot more than that. Ever since moving to Nashville, she’s made it a point to play live as much as she possibly can with the local cats, and it’s paying off.

Last month she and her band, The Hodge Podge, played the BottleRock Napa Valley festival in California. It was great exposure for them, especially with their debut album to be released “the second week of August”, which was announced at the show last night. There, they had the opportunity to meet different bands from across the country, and were even given the chance to jam with Shane Hawkins from Chevy Metal. He made a surprise guest appearance for a song during the benefit concert.

The Hodge Podge consists of Esi on vocals, Prince Parker on rhythm guitar, Eric Fortaleza on bass, Joshua Blaylock on keys, Brandon Combs on drums, and Grace Bowers playing lead guitar.

It’s an eccentric blend of musicians, all coming together to form the Hodge Podge. Prince is a local Nashville player himself, constantly upping his game by playing different venues across the city. Eric has been a part of Pitch Meeting, a weekly jam night hosted by several artists in town, for quite a while now. It seems like he can play anything at the drop of a hat, which is perfect for the groovy psychedelic-esque music of the Hodge Podge.

Diaz took time to make small pauses between some songs, explaining their meaning, while others were left up to the imagination. ‘Weird Faith’ is a collection of songs leading to a road of self-discovery, asking the bigger questions in life. It takes you through the complexity of relationships, romantic and platonic, and everything in between.

Her voice is reminiscent of those who came before her, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and some more contemporary artists such as Kacey Musgraves and Phoebe Bridgers. Although, at the same time, it’s completely her own.

Starting at the end of April, Diaz will join Musgraves as they embark on a world tour. Their soft melodies and perfect lyricism will surely inspire and break hearts everywhere.

Another artist she is well known for touring with is Harry Styles. An honorary member of his “Love On Tour” band who has definitely collected at least a few fans on the way, although her talent alone speaks for itself.

What started as a small gathering at Lucky Bamboo’s Chinese restaurant in 2018 has slowly built itself into the major event we all know and love today. Space Prom means so much to so many people and for good reason. It’s a show that combines the company of great people and great music. It's 80’s prom in outer space! Artists from across Nashville come together to sing the classics and everyone sings along.

Every once in a while you’ll come across a talent that brings people from different areas of life into one safe space. That’s exactly what Nashville native Nordista Freeze has managed to do.

Space Prom is special not only because it brings us together, but also because it reminds us of what this community is really all about. Nashville has always been a place of oneness and feeling like you belong to something bigger than yourself. The first show I ever took photos at was Space Prom in 2020. I had no real experience with that sort of thing, but Freeze and his family of friends made me feel welcome right away. It truly set the tone for how my experience in this city has continued thus far.

Everyone knows that QOTSA frontman Josh Homme is a blunt, straightforward, no-bullshit kind of guy. He’s made constant headlines with that rockstar attitude of his, and that’s all part of the fun. Of course the music is incredible, other-worldly even, but part of a Queens show experience is seeing the man himself in full action. Saturday was no exception. He did not disappoint.

The iconic riff started off, and everyone’s eyes were glued to the stage. “No One Knows”, one of their most popular songs, roared across the amphitheater, drawing the crowd in. Bassist Michael Shuman bounced around, keeping an intense look on his face for the entirety of their performance. The adrenaline never let up as the show continued on, playing songs like “I Sat by the Ocean” from their 2013 album, ‘…Like Clockwork’, “Go With The Flow”, and from the most recent record, “Paper Machete”.

At one point, there was a ruckus in the crowd and, in typical Homme fashion, he decided to call it out, asserting some sort of dominance by saying, “security, you work for me”.

The transitions were seamless, it almost seemed like they had been doing this for awhile…wink wink. In all honesty, Queens of the Stone Age might be one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

It was all led by Homme’s impressive showmanship that he no doubt gathered from jamming with renowned musicians throughout his career. Playing with the likes of John Paul Jones, Iggy Pop, and Dave Grohl is no small accomplishment…and that’s just a typical Tuesday for the charismatic rocker.

The Criticals Come Home

Nashville’s new favorite rock band had a fantastic homecoming at The Basement East on Wednesday night. It’s no secret that Music City is becoming known for one particular genre (other than country) nowadays. And that’s rock ‘n’ roll.

So, what does “rock ‘n’ roll” even mean? Well, Wikipedia defines it as, “a genre of popular music that evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s”. Fast-forward to 2023, and the same fiery passion for this style of music still stands today, with much thanks to bands like The Criticals.

The front row was full as soon as the doors opened, fans rushed to claim their spot with great anticipation. They were about to experience something unique. It doesn't matter how many times you see a band live, the performance is never exactly the same. While waiting for the show to begin, I chatted with super fans who have coined themselves as the “CritiGals”. One said that this show was one of twenty-something they had already seen of the up-and-comers. Most people would be taken aback by this impressive feat, but I myself am no stranger to the irresistible addiction of live music.

Other local acts, The Band Light and Bird and Byron started off the evening. Young, fun, and definitely rock-inspired, The Band Light gave the girls in the audience exactly what they wanted. Swooning over the rock ‘n’ rollers, the crowd fell in love with singer Konnor Dolberry’s Harry Styles-esque dance moves and infectious energy. Guitarist Garrett Goodrich sported an orange EVH guitar, running around the stage like Eddie himself.

Bird and Byron brought a jazzy, melodic inspired vibe to the night. Again, the crowd was eating it up. With quite a following on TikTok, the band has been posting videos on their page fairly regularly, showing off their talents. Both acts seemed to be the perfect addition to the lineup.

The Criticals laid it all out on the table. This would be the second time the band has sold out The Basement East in two years. They came to conquer and that’s exactly what they did. With lead singer Parker Forbes’ moves like Jagger and a voice that is reminiscent of early 2000s indie rock bands, the frontman provided the perfect concoction that everyone in the room seemed to be drunk on.

Lead guitarist Cole Shugart took over the stage, running back and forth while engaging with fans and his bandmates alike. The energy in the room couldn’t have been better. There was plenty of crowd surfing, moshing, and everywhere you turned there seemed to be someone smiling from ear to ear.

New songs like “Clever Girl” and “Belmont” sounded larger than life in the sold out 600-capacity room, the response from the audience a promising one. Older favorites such as “Good Lookin” and “Treat Ya Better” from their 2019 EP titled ‘Mimosa Hygiene’ were also played flawlessly throughout the night. Although their sound is fresh, it also comes with the grit and rawness that is so loved by the rock and indie communities. Their style is polished, but comes with a story.

This would be the last time the band’s long-time rhythm guitarist, Chuchi “Chuy” Rosas would be playing with them. It was an emotional night, and each member played their hearts out.

A couple of covers were thrown in, including “Can’t Hardly Wait” by The Replacements and a personal favorite, “Boys Don’t Cry” by The Cure. Both renditions were great additions to the set.

At the merch booth, they had 45’s of “Clever Girl/Belmont” for sale, along with cassettes. Down to the last detail, The Criticals have their image locked down. Going to one of their shows is a full experience, one that will likely make you into their biggest fan.

Not only are The Criticals Nashville’s favorite rock band, pretty soon they’ll be your city’s too.

Rebel Girls: Bikini Kill Take on Nashville For The First Time Since ‘94

Punk music has always meant culture, community, and fresh ideas. Bikini Kill, an all-female band hailing from Olympia, Washington, has been pushing this narrative forward since its formation in 1990. Frontwoman Kathleen Hanna has been a pioneer in the feminist punk “Riot grrrl” movement. Even though it’s been over 30 years since the band played their first show, on Thursday night at Marathon Music Works in Nashville, it felt like almost nothing (and everything) had changed.

The world has certainly changed since 1990, both for better and for worse. Hanna and her bandmates (Tobi Vail, drummer), (Kathi Wilcox, bassist), and (Erica Dawn Lyle, guitarist), took the stage with the same fiery passion as they’ve always had.

With everything going on in the world, and everything going on in Nashville, it was about time Bikini Kill brought back the powerful songs that have steered so many through the hardest moments in their lives. The show was originally scheduled to be held in 2020, and ultimately was made into fruition three years later. Hanna made a short but sentimental speech about her second cousin, Darcelle, who up until recently due to his passing, was the oldest living drag queen in the United States. She brought attention to the ignorant-backed drag ban that has been a hot topic in Tennessee for the past few weeks. It is insanely inspirational when a band who has been around for a while continues to use their voice for everything they have stood for from the beginning of their career. In an interview with Hannah Cron of the Nashville Scene, Hanna stated, “They know that they’re old men and it’s a young women’s world, and they are fucked.”

Favorite tunes like, “Rebel Girl”, “Carnival”, and “Double Dare Ya” were sung by everyone in the audience, from young kids to 70-year-old punks, to different members of the LGBTQ+ community. It was a brilliant sight to behold. The band members traded instruments a few times throughout the set, shining a light on just how much talent these women hold. A concert of inclusiveness can feel like the best tea party in the world. No matter who’s standing next to you, they can feel like your best friend in these situations, singing along to cherished lyrics as one.

It’s important to give younger generations insight into how far we have come since the early 90’s, while at the same time encouraging them to never quiet their voices on issues that matter to them. Without Riot grrrls, where would we be today? Better yet, where would we be tomorrow?

Love Rising: A Story of Hope

Hope, resilience, and togetherness echoed throughout Bridgestone Arena last night in Nashville as LGBTQ+ artists and allies graced the stage with their songs. The anti-drag bill, along with the law denying trans youth health care, have caused the people of Tennessee to rise up against the hate and ignorance behind the lawmakers who have made them. Musicians like Sheryl Crow, Joy Oladokun, and Hayley Williams gave their support by showing up to speak their minds on the matter. Tennessee may hold a lot of corruption and despair, but Love Rising will always win in the end.

Mayor John Cooper even made an appearance to show his support and to declare March 20th the official “Love Rising Day” in the city of Nashville.

The lineup of the night included Allison Russell, Amanda Shires, Brittany Howard, Hayley Williams, Hozier, Jake Wesley Rogers, Jason Isbell, Joy Oladokun, Julien Baker, Maren Morris, Mya Byrne, Sheryl Crow, Yola, and The Rainbow Coalition Band. Just a few of the incredible drag queens of the evening were Britney Banks, Asia O’Hara, Vivica Steele, and Justine Van de Blair.

Jake Wesley Rogers opened the show with his beautiful song, “Pluto”, instantly making everyone in the room feel loved and included. Allison Russell, someone who has had a powerful voice in the Nashville community for awhile now, was one of the organizers of the evening, and proved just how strong we can all be if we just stand together as one. Playing the banjo and clarinet throughout the night, she gave each and every artist who walked on the stage a safe place to express who they are.

Sheryl Crow brought the fire with her hit song, “Everyday Is A Winding Road”, one she claimed continues to rewrite its meaning year after year. Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires joined forces, as they most often do, to perform, “Cover Me Up”. Julien Baker, a Tennessee native and queer person, left the crowd in a hushed awe as she sang about her own struggles when it comes to the unaccepted culture of this world. Mya Byrne, a talented songwriter and trans woman, performed with her partner, Swan Real, while sharing the hardships trans people in this country face to this day.

Hozier took everyone to church of course, and poured his heart out to the LGBTQ+ community, expressing his full support and admiration of strength. Hayley Williams also expressed her full support and even had one of her best friends, dressed in drag, come up to dance with her while she sang.

It was very much a legendary evening filled with love, light, and most of all, hope. Love Rising isn’t meant to stop with you and me, it’s meant to rise up and blanket the entire world with the brilliant sense of togetherness that Nashville felt last night. As Ru Paul has said, “a social media post isn’t as powerful as a vote”. Do not forget to participate in every election and do your part to stop hate from rising instead of love.

They had a soft and gentle approach to the crowd, asking “has anyone had their heart broken recently?”, while audience members shouted out the names of those who had wronged them.

Fan favorites from her debut album, The Baby, such as “Big Wheel” and “Winnebago” played throughout the night. She jumped around the stage seemingly without a care in the world even though her lyrics hold a weight so heavy that everyone in the room would hold their breath.

Honey, her most recent release from January, shows a side of the artist that has musically opened up her world even more to listeners. “Mad At Me”, a collab with papa mbye, has frequently been played on local radio station Lightning 100 and given Samia a boost with the music community in Nashville. It’s a fun song that chants in the catchy chorus, “are you still…mad at me?” Others from Honey included in the set list were the title track and “Pink Balloon”.

At the end of the night she was joined by friends and boyfriend Briston Maroney, who is also an indie artist residing in Nashville. It all goes back to community I suppose, and the best one in the world is right here in the middle of Tennessee. There’s a reason musicians from all over the world decide to pack their bags and make the move. No other place in the world is quite like it.

Samia will continue the rest of her tour starting on April 13th in Charleston, South Carolina at Music Farm. Go visit her website at www.samiaband.com for more dates and information!

Nashville In Ecstasy: Inhaler Live at Brooklyn Bowl

On Friday night Inhaler took Nashville by storm for the third time in two years. Their success has only multiplied from the first show they played in November of 2021 at the now closed High Watt on Cannery Row. So much has changed since then, especially when you’re one of the hottest rock bands on the rise in music today.

Opening the show was local artist Cecilia Castleman, who put on a lovely performance with just her voice and guitar.

Last month, Cuts & Bruises, the second studio album from Inhaler, was released just in time for their US tour. Their set at Brooklyn Bowl included a great selection of tunes from their first release, It Won’t Always Be Like This, along with songs from the new record.

It felt like being taken back in time during the performance. The wardrobe worn by the band was very reminiscent of that laid back early 90’s style that groups like Oasis and Blur made so popular. Though they must practice consistently to maintain such a tight set, the four guys from Dublin make it look like they’re not giving their actions on stage a second thought. The crowd was filled with girls in cowboy hats displaying something Inhaler related, a uniform the band has encouraged, setting the tone for the fun atmosphere their shows have created. Music City just happened to be the perfect place for this growing tradition.

“Love Will Get You There”, “These Are The Days”, and “So Far So Good” are among the uplifting alt-rock songs that the group has written for their latest release. Nothing beats the positive energy that a show like Friday night’s is able to bring. It’s safe to say that rock and roll is here to stay, thanks to musicians like Elijah Hewson, Josh Jenkinson, Robert Keating, and Ryan McMahon.

Their US tour will continue through the beginning of April before hitting the road with Harry Styles in Ireland and joining the Arctic Monkeys on their European tour this summer.

Hello From The Hills: Tyler Childers and Friends

Nothing compares to hearing beautiful folk and Americana music spread across a quiet room in Nashville. City Winery hosted an intimate evening filled with musicians from around the country, joining together to bring awareness to the terrible disease of addiction.

Artists like Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Sierra Ferrell, Amythyst Kiah, Arlo McKinley, Kelsey Waldon, Buffalo Wabs and The Price Hill Hustle, William Matheny, Tommy Prine, Tre Burt, and Darrin Hacquard all shared the stage with Childers. Each artist and band that played poured their heart out to the audience, revealing the deepest parts of themselves for all to hear.

Coming together for such a great cause brought a powerful energy to the venue and left everyone with this feeling. John Prine’s record label, Oh Boy Records, made a presence for the benefit in contribution to the cause. There were heartfelt stories shared by the organizations who were a part of the night and performers alike. The first act of the night was Buffalo Wabs and The Price Hill Hustle from Cincinnati, OH, giving everyone their money’s worth with enough pickin’ and stompin’ to make anybody’s mama proud.

Next came the wonderful Tommy Prine, son of legendary musician John Prine. His songs will be just as great as his dad’s if he keeps at the pace he’s going. The talent in their family rings true throughout generations. It was beautiful and sad at the same time hearing his words about his father’s recent death. More music is expected to be released soon by Prine that will showcase his songwriting even further.

Darrin Hacquard carried his folk tunes from the Hocking Hills of Ohio. Having opened up for Kelsey Waldon before, who was also on the bill, he was the perfect fit for the lineup.

West Virginia’s William Matheny did not disappoint in his performance, adding to the night in a unique way. There’s certain soul that West Virginia instills in its musicians and Matheny most certainly did not lack it.

Oh Boy artist Kelsey Waldon was fantastic in her short but sweet two song performance. Her classic country with a kick voice lit up City Winery. She even came out to sing a song with artist Tre Burt, who did a great job as well.

Margo Price and husband/collaborator Jeremy Ivey gave a gorgeous two song performance. Price’s song “Lydia”, a story about a woman who has gone through much hardship in her life, was a part of this.

Arlo McKinley, the last artist signed to Oh Boy Records before John Prine’s death in 2020, was next and blew the crowd away with his soulful voice. Cincinnati raised and now residing in Nashville, McKinley has been in the Music City scene for awhile, sharing his songs and charm.

Grammy-nominated Amythyst Kiah from East Tennessee played both a Gibson SG as well as a banjo during her time on the stage. Her voice definitely brings the soulful mountain feeling in which she grew up.

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires played together like they were married. Oh, wait. Both are extremely talented and compliment each other well. In his song, “Cover Me Up”, the lyric, “I sobered up, I swore off that stuff forever this time” hit home, bringing people to clap and cheer.

It was awesome seeing Tyler Childers play a room like the one at City Winery. I’ve been listening to his music for a few years now and it’s a lovely thing getting to finally see someone play live. His music has been getting a lot of recognition recently for how amazing and truly impactful it is. He made some jokes onstage about it being so quiet and hearing his own thoughts, which he described as “scary”. His personality is just as endearing as his music and I think that’s why people love him so much. Someone yelled “Shake the Frost” halfway through his set, to which he replied, “You know what, that’s a good idea”. His songs are honest and raw, with a whole lot of soul. Using his powers for good, he was able to put on this benefit for a cause that should be brought to more attention but is needlessly shunned away by society. Artists like Tyler Childers, Jason Isbell, Amythyst Kiah, and all of the others give music what it needs: the truth. Where would the world be without music?

Ramble On: Zeppelin Tribute ZoSo Bring Their Magic to Nashville

The crowd was very enthusiastic as the lights went down, revealing what they had all been waiting for. Music withstands the test of time and nothing or no one can take that away. It has healing powers, magic, even. Led Zeppelin gave a gift to the world. Sadly the original lineup will never play another show in this lifetime, but that doesn't mean other musicians can’t.

On lead guitar, Jimmy Page (a.k.a. James Rotondi), pulled off a near perfect Page, swaying back and forth with each guitar solo, giving the audience exactly what they came for. His skills with the six-string obviously came with a lot of hard work and dedication. It was even that more impressive, providing an authentic feel of the show. Vocalist Robert Plant (Matt Jernigan) did not disappoint either, strutting around while flashing the appropriate smile here and there. Drummer John Bonham (Bevan Davies) absolutely tore the house down, especially during the “Moby Dick” solo. John Paul Jones (Adam Sandling) on bass and keys rounded out the iconic lineup.

From “Stairway to Heaven” to “The Crunge”, the band covered a wide variety of tracks, from hits to deep cuts. Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands of all time, and one of the greatest in my opinion (I’m sure a lot of people would agree with me). I’m thankful for groups like ZoSo who play this music live for those of us to hear who never had the chance to experience the real thing for ourselves. Make sure to go see ZoSo on tour this year and ‘em a “Whole Lotta Love”.

There’s nothing quite like experiencing some of the greatest music of all time live. Everyone knows the melodies made by The Beach Boys. Songs like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “Surfin’ U.S.A.”, and “Good Vibrations” have easily become the soundtrack to our lives. These are songs that no doubt have a special memory tied to them, no matter who you are. Growing up, I remember hearing them throughout popular 80’s sitcom Full House. They remind me of my childhood. Even though they were released in the 60’s, the impact is so strong that it has carried across generations.

The night at City Winery was light-hearted and gave a great impression of who this man is who had been involved in the history of the hits we all know and love. Before going into another song, Jardine would give a small backstory on the track, explaining how it came into fruition. One of my favorite stories he told involves The Beach Boys’ 1967 song, “Vegetables”, featured on the album Smiley Smile. Brian Wilson was very into eating healthy at the time and wanted to pay tribute to his nutritional little friends, so came “Vegetables”. Apparently Paul McCartney had come into the studio late one night while they were recording because they had the same producer at the time and ended up making his mark on the record. On the single version you can hear him chewing carrots in the background! Hey, that was the 60’s, man.

The band did a wonderful job of playing favorites from the catalogue. Sharing lead vocal responsibilities was none other than Al’s son, Matt Jardine. His voice sounds surprisingly similar to Brian Wilson’s that there’s hardly any difference at all, it was like Wilson was there himself. The lineup have been playing together for quite awhile and it was evident the work that had been put in. What was most rewarding about witnessing the show was how proud band leader Jardine acted to have been a part of something so extraordinary. I love The Beach Boys and know you probably do, too. If given the chance, go see one of their shows live, you won’t regret or ever forget it.

Wet Leg has gained a lot of popularity over the past year since releasing their debut single, “Chaise Longue”. Not long after, “Wet Dream” was put out and the rest is history. Their rise to success came quick, but well-deserved nonetheless.

Like a lot of people, I first heard about the band after hearing Harry Styles’ cover of “Wet Dream” in the BBC Radio Live Lounge. Next year, they will be opening for the pop star on the Australia and New Zealand legs of his tour.

Twen put on a great performance with the raw and gritty energy that was needed for the show. I could tell how much their stage personas had evolved from a couple of years ago catching them at The Basement East. It’s always nice seeing a local band bloom where they’re planted, especially when bands across the pond recognize their talent as well.

First up was VEAUX, who have definitely made a name for themselves after last night, attaining some new fans. Their set was moody with a whole lot of rhythm. The three-piece band from Nashville consists of brothers Aaron and Dominick Wagner and long-time friend Andrew Black.

The dynamic between the two friends of Wet Leg, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, was fun and inspiring to witness. Their stage presence was empowering, exciting, and carefree. Very early on in the set, they played “Wet Dream”, which of course everyone was dying to hear. It was a good move throwing it in so soon, leaving the rest of the night to be an exploration.

Having only formed as a band in 2019, they have already come such a long way. The audience at Brooklyn Bowl was singing along to every word and I can only imagine what another couple of years will bring them in their musical journey.

It’s no wonder DeTiger has gained such a massive following over the years. From DJ’ing as a teenager in Brooklyn, touring with FLETCHER, to going viral on TikTok over the pandemic, and as of yesterday becoming one of the newest Forbes’ “30 Under 30”, she seems to only keep gaining momentum.

Backing her on stage is older brother Rex DeTiger on drums and Horace Bray on guitar. The chemistry between the three band members is electric. It’s always inspiring to see a female-fronted band, especially one whose front woman can outplay anybody in the room.

About halfway through the show, she asked the audience if anyone played bass, a regular ritual in the set. A guy in his 20’s popped up on the stage and the duel began. It was more of a short jam, but cool to witness nonetheless.

The vibe in the room was refreshing. The musician gave off the impression that she was truly grateful to be there and it showed. Her stage presence is one of the best I’ve seen in awhile. You could just tell how humble her character is by the way she was smiling from ear to ear and interacting with fans all throughout the night. One man in the audience told me how he had seen her in Detroit earlier this month and drove all the way to Nashville just to see her again. When that happens, you know the artist is stellar.

They played some funk-ified covers, “Style” by Taylor Swift, “Electric Feel” by MGMT, and “Glamorous” by Fergie. All great choices, really showing her musical influences in a unique way.

Old School Heavy Metal: W.A.S.P. Celebrates 40th Anniversary at The Ryman

It’s not every day that Blackie Lawless comes to town. Especially to the U.S. The band hasn’t toured the States in nearly a decade, which caused everyone in attendance to be that much more excited about what was happening around them. It was a truly special night filled with soaring guitar riffs and more head banging than most people see in their lifetime.

The show was opened up by Armored Saint, a group who started in the same year and city as their touring partners. Vocalist John Bush did a fantastic job of leading his band members into an epic show.

Walking into the Ryman felt like entering a time capsule. The atmosphere was driven by the old school rock ‘n’ rollers who grew up with bands like W.A.S.P. It was evident that everyone there was passionate about this kind of music, and rightfully so. There’s something so special and unique about a community that can come together, no matter what decade, and bring the same feeling from 1982 to 2022.

Guitarist Doug Blair mastered some incredible solos, which goes to show why he’s been a member for as long as he has. Bassist Mike Duda laid down some thick bass lines that kept the momentum throughout the performance. Aquiles Priester, the newest member of the lineup having joined in 2017, completed the circle.

Even Blackie Lawless knows what an honor playing The Ryman Auditorium is and made a point to announce just how proud he was to be standing on that stage. He said that his mother had raised him on country music and how special it was for him to be given such a great opportunity. We love a humble rockstar.

Having been around for 40 years, W.A.S.P. did a hell of a job making the evening insanely reminiscent of their heyday. Songs like “Wild Child”, “Sleeping (In The Fire)”, and “I Wanna Be Somebody” sent the audience into a frenzy. Right before the encore, they played audio and video clips from the 1985 lawsuits regarding censorship in music. Voices like Frank Zappa, John Denver, and Dee Snider came over the speakers, leaving a revolutionary chill over the crowd. Last but not least, W.A.S.P. had been considered one of the worst of these music groups and had been threatened during that time. Not only did they prevail, they’re still known as one of the most iconic heavy metal bands of all time.

The room was full but everyone seemed to be relaxed and excited. This band had gone out to conquer the rest of the world but did not neglect coming back to where it all began. At one point, Sophia Allison said “I don’t think a lot of people realize that I’m actually from here”. So many great bands and singer-songwriters come out of this town, it isn’t hard to believe.

“circle the drain”, one of my personal favorites, came third in the set. They covered a good variety of songs, including some from their latest album Sometimes, Forever that was released in June. Behind them hung a giant cloud that gave off the impression that an emo thunderstorm could start at any moment. Allison held her electric guitars closely to her chest, serenading friends, family, and fans throughout the venue. Brooklyn Bowl is the perfect space for a show that says “you’ve made it” while also feeling extremely intimate at the same time.

The 1975 in Nashville At Their Very Best

The 1975 brought their latest tour to Nashville’s historic Municipal Auditorium on Sunday night. A nearly sold-out show, the band gave everything they had to an audience that was more than eager to see them again.

HANNAH LANEY

The 1975 by Hannah Laney

Nashville Municipal Auditorium

November 13th, 2022

Stepping into the world of The 1975 is an experience so unique that only those who have done it know exactly what it’s like. Looking down, black Doc Martens were on practically everyone’s feet as they marched towards the stage. It was incredible. It was almost like entering a time capsule of 2014, which gave me even more reason to respect and admire this group of musicians so thoroughly. Personally, I feel like if an artist or band can create a movement so big, a culture so massive, that it stands the test of time, they’ve succeeded. For example, you go to see Motley Crue and what’s everyone wearing? Exactly. You probably pictured it in your head. That’s what The 1975 has done. Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee may have captured the Sunset Strip look of the 80’s, but oh boy does Matty Healy have the days of Tumblr on lockdown.

The show was very impressive, it left me wanting to know more about these guys, and that’s always a good sign. I definitely listened to their music in…you guessed it, 2014, but I was never a huge fan. Of course I had songs like “Chocolate” and “Girls” on repeat, but I never got down to the meat and potatoes of it all. From what I could tell, they covered a lot of their discography, starting with the new and slowly gravitating backwards. It’s funny hearing a song, especially live, and thinking of the experience tied to it. Back home I would take a cycling class every once in awhile, and all I could think about when “The Sound” came on was that class and how they would play it every. single. time. Healy really left the audience with an artful taste in their mouths. The stage design was set up in the fashion of what I can only imagine an English household looks like. Entering the set, the band slowly turned the lights in the house on one by one. It was a very cool idea and made me appreciate the show that much more.

The 1975 by Hannah Laney

Nashville Municipal Auditorium

November 13th, 2022

At one point about halfway through the show, Healy had most of his body turned away from the audience and said something along the lines of, “Dolphins can’t be in tanks because the sound signals they make reflect off the walls and drive them insane”. It was…interesting. And I loved it. This guy was here for a reason and in it for all of the right reasons. An insanely talented musician and songwriter, Matty Healy gave the fans his all every night, and it showed. He also brought up the fact that he “just wanted to be loved” and tried to brush it off right away as a joke, but I think everyone in that auditorium felt how real it was. And not only that, but fucking relatable.

One reference that was made in a gesture was that referencing the “Robbers” music video that had even my heart fluttering. The iconic scene in the video where he’s leaning down from the stage to get closer to the girl…OUCH. Everyone went into a frenzy when he did this, including myself. I immediately knew what it was from.

Chain smoking and drinking from a flask for the whole evening, the frontman didn’t give off the vibe that he was uncomfortable in the slightest. It really was as though the crowd was peering into his living room, almost like we shouldn’t have been witnessing such a gorgeous presentation. He even sat down on the couch and started touching himself for a split second there.

The 1975 by Hannah Laney

They weren’t approving photo passes for this tour so I did the best with what I had, my iPhone 13. I may have fallen off The 1975 train for a little bit, but of course their music was a big part of being 15 like it was for so many of us there that night. Brilliant emotion, stage design, and overall performance. There’s something so beautiful about music that can capture an entire generation and have their dedication at its fingertips…it’s powerful. And necessary. It’s the kind of stuff that makes the world go ‘round. Beatlemania anyone?

The feeling in the room was incredibly relaxed throughout the evening, which is always surprising for a sold-out show. Maya Hawke made a lovely Music City debut, giving a delicate performance that was most unexpected. Nonetheless, she put on a beautiful set that had her fans falling even more in love. In between songs she made small commentary on the meaning behind them, leaving the rest to the imagination.

Her latest release “Sweet Tooth” was co-written by musician Christian Lee Hutson. Working with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers on numerous projects, Hutson’s input on the single reveals the promising sounds of what could be the next big indie thing.

The venue was completely filled, everyone listening with a quiet intensity that showed the utmost respect for the performers onstage. Webster sang favorites such as “Kingston”, “In A Good Way”, and “Right Side of My Neck”.

Screams of “I love you, Faye!” rang from the front row, while the singer-songwriter continued into the next verse.

A band that has been around for over a decade and one that has put dedication into their live shows, Local Natives gave it their all while pulling from an impressive catalogue. Vocalist and guitarist Taylor Rice held the audience on the tips of their toes for the entire performance. Their first tour since the pandemic, the five members were ready to get back on the road and in front of their loyal fanbase. People of all ages scattered the historic pews, singing along to every word as the night flew by much too quickly.

Favorites like “When Am I Gonna Lose You”, “Dark Days”, and “I Saw You Close Your Eyes” sent the crowd into an indie-rock frenzy, bringing everyone together the way live music does in its own magical way.

The show was kicked off with Jordana, “heartbreak indie rock pop sweet hawt” as self-proclaimed by her Instagram bio, and she wasn’t wrong. Her soothing tunes being played throughout the Mother Church definitely gained the up-and-comer new fans that night. It was the perfect setting for the two groups to play their music in Nashville.

Guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist Kelcey Ayer added to the seamless transitions between songs with charm. The band pointed out how they have their own “Ry-man”, guitarist Ryan Hahn. Passing back and forth their lighthearted humor gave the evening a more relaxed feel as well. Drummer Matt Frazier kept the perfect tempo while Nik Ewing laid down some groovy bass lines.

“Lemon”, a Local Natives track featuring Sharon Van Etten, was performed by the band along with special guest and opener of the tour, Jordana. The rendition was well-received by the crowd, only leaving them wanting more.
